3rd HGK Lecture by Prof. Uttam L. Raj Bhandary, MIT's Lester Wolfe Professor

Prof Uttam L. Raj Bhandary, Lester Wolfe Professor of Molecular Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) delivered 3rd Har Gobind Khorana Lecture on 6th December, 2017 at National Agri- Food Biotechnology Institute, Knowledge City, Mohali. Dr. Bhandary addressed the gathering of more than 350 science students & teachers mostly from schools of Punjab. Describing Dr Khorana a Pioneer and a Visionary, Prof Bhandary shared 49 years of his close association with Prof Khorana. He fascinated the audience with the stories/ anecdotes about how Khorana rose from rural settings of Punjab to become the Icon of Molecular Biology. He talked about determination, hard work and self motivation as key features of success frequently quoted by Prof Khorana to his students. He also stated one of famous Khorana quote - "if you have to get far, you have to travel alone". He also shared his own work on nucleic acids and nucleic acid-protein interactions using biochemical and genetic approaches.


About Uttam Raj Bhandary

Dr. Uttam L RajBhandary was born in Nepal. After his early education from Patan School, Nepal, he received his M.Sc in Chemistry from Presidency College, University of Calcutta and Ph.D. from University of Durham, England with Professor Sir James Baddiley on Synthesis of Compounds related to Coenzyme A including polymers from bacterial cell wall. In 1962, he moved to University of Wisconsin at Madison, USA for post-doctoral research with Professor Har Gobind Khorana and 1969 he joined as a faculty of the Department of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge where he currently holds the Lester Wolfe Chair in Molecular Biology. He & his research team including graduate students, post doc fellows & visiting faculty have been working extensively on nucleic acids and nucleic acid-protein interactions using biochemical and genetic approaches. He has also worked at the National Cancer Research Institute in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. RajBhandary has published >200 research papers in scientific journals. For his outstanding contributions in Molecular Biology, he has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and has received many other awards. Dr RajBhandary has served on the Editorial Boards of many prestigious National and International Journals like Archives of Biochemistry-Biophysics, Nucleic Acids Research, Analytical Biochemistry, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Gene Expression.
