WaSH Project – Water and Solid Waste Auditing in 20 Schools of District Mohali

NCSTC, DST, Govt. of India sanctioned a project titled, “Water and Solid Waste Auditing Assessment with Implementation Plan in twenty schools of district Mohali, Punjab” under ‘Jal Sutra Eco-WaSH Futures Program’. PSCST took it up in 20 Schools of Mohali district. The objective of the project was to create awareness on water & sanitation, keeping the school environment clean and promote water conservation though appropriate auditing measures. Under the project, capacity building, education, awareness activities creation of WASH club in each school and elaborate water and solid waste auditing was carried in each of 20 schools. In this study:

  • More than 10,000 students were sensitized on the subject of water conservation, water management through auditing and solid waste management.
  • WaSH Clubs were established in 20 schools of District Mohali.
  • Water auditing was carried out on drinking water and toilets of each school.
  • After conducting water auditing, many leakages in the drinking water taps were plugged and some taps were replaced. This resulted in saving of more than 2000 litres/month of drinking water in one school as the water was being wasted earlier due to negligence.
  • Various on-site awareness camps were conducted for the staff and students on water conservation and water auditing. 
  • All the schools enthusiastically celebrated Water Conservation Day and conducted a number of activities under the WaSH club i.e. painting competition, debates, essay writing competition, expert lectures etc.
